Insights

Aviation History

The Boeing 747-400 is an iconic long-haul jumbo jet; China Airlines was a major Asian 747 operator. Production ended in 2009 as airlines replace it with more fuel-efficient twinjets.

Fleet Rarity

747-400 passenger variants are being retired rapidly; only a handful remain in passenger use, mainly converted to cargo.

Record Flights

Used on major Pacific and transcontinental routes; not generally used for record-breaking ultra-long-hauls, but historically a backbone of long-haul air travel.

Safety & Events

China Airlines has had several notable 747-400 incidents (none in this photo). One Boeing 747-400 had a non-fatal tailstrike at Hong Kong in 2002.

Future Outlook

Most 747-400s are being retired, stored, or converted to cargo. Some will be preserved in museums; few remain in regular passenger service.
